Some road trips need a playlist, a full tank and a destination.
Others apparently need a fedora.
Welcome to Jordan: where ancient cities hide behind sandstone cliffs, deserts look suspiciously like another planet and a normal drive can very quickly turn into something worthy of the big screen.
Autumn also brings increasingly comfortable weather for exploring the country, especially compared with the intense summer months.
No giant boulders or lost arks required. Just grab the keys and bring your sense of adventure.
- Amman: where the adventure begins
Start in Amman, where ancient history and modern city life somehow share the same postcode.
Explore the Citadel, stop by the Roman Theatre, wander through lively neighbourhoods and then move on to arguably the most important cultural activity of all: eating. Falafel, hummus, local bakeries and mansaf should keep your itinerary pleasantly busy.
Amman combines historic sites with modern cafés, markets and everyday Jordanian culture.
And if you happen to be there for work? Don’t rush straight back to the airport once the meetings finish.
Add an extra day or two and let the business trip have a much better ending. Close the laptop. Open the itinerary.
- Petra: Indiana Jones had the right idea
You’ve seen it in photographs. You’ve seen it on Instagram. And yes, you may have seen it in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
But walking through Petra’s narrow Siq and watching the Treasury slowly appear between the sandstone walls hits differently in real life. The site extends far beyond that famous façade, with tombs, temples, streets and remarkable examples of Nabataean architecture.
So don’t arrive, take one picture and leave. That would be like watching the first ten minutes of an Indiana Jones movie and deciding you’ve got the general idea.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and give Petra enough time to properly impress you. It probably will.
- Wadi Rum: did we accidentally drive to Mars?
Just when you think Jordan has used up all its dramatic scenery, Wadi Rum enters the chat.
Towering sandstone formations, red desert landscapes and enormous open spaces make it feel almost otherworldly. The area has even been used as a filming location for movies set on Mars.
Apparently Hollywood looked at Wadi Rum and thought, close enough. Explore with an experienced local guide, stay for sunset and, if you have time, spend a night under the desert sky.
One important note: leave the off-roading to properly equipped vehicles and local operators. Your normal rental car did not sign up for Fast & Furious: Desert Drift.
- Autumn looks pretty good from Jordan
There is something appealing about swapping grey autumn mornings for ancient ruins and desert sunsets.
September can still be hot, while October and November generally bring milder conditions that can make sightseeing and longer drives more comfortable. That pleasant weather also makes autumn a popular travel period, so don’t automatically expect empty attractions or bargain prices everywhere.
Instead, travel smart. Compare a few dates, check midweek options and book popular experiences ahead when it makes sense. Saving a little on accommodation simply means more budget for food.
And somehow, we always end up back at food.
- Take the scenic route, that’s kind of the point
Petra may get the headlines, but Jordan has much more waiting between Point A and Point B.
The journey between Amman and Petra can include the more scenic King’s Highway, passing through historic towns and dramatic landscapes. You can also look beyond the most famous sights to places such as Jerash, local markets and smaller cultural stops. Leave a little breathing room in the itinerary.
Stop when the view deserves it. Try something you can’t pronounce. Take the photo. Buy the questionable souvenir.
Not every good travel memory needs to be scheduled between 14:30 and 15:15.

So yes, make time for Petra. But don’t let Petra be the whole story.
